The Phil Mitchell Radio Hour begins as a campy solo show following Evangelical preacher Phil Mitchell (Noah Bennett) as he broadcasts live on air before turning into an intense and supernatural horror.
Written, directed, and performed by Noah Bennett, this semi-immersive show perfectly handles the often divisive subject of religion, while never condemning or condoning it. As Phil preaches, miraculously heals the crowd, asks for donations (in return, you may even receive some “Salvation Soup”, the official soup of Phil’s church), and takes questions from callers — the mood shifts. Outside the studio, the Rapture has begun.
Complete with the tagline: “It’s the Rapture, so why is this preacher still here?” This show explores themes of nature versus nurture, fear, acceptance, desperation, bargaining, ignorance, ego, expectations, and so much more while the audience, and Phil Mitchell himself, figures out exactly why he’s still here.
Combining the lighting design of Garrett Ratliff and Cleo Borrel, the ever present sound of a crackling fire, projections, and some simple special effects, Bennett is able to physically transform himself with an appearance of ease. As the world is divided into good and bad, the internal battle within Phil takes centre stage.
Will he make it into the kingdom of Heaven? Will you?
